Barbara’s story begins as one of four children in her family. Her father worked for a gas pipeline company and transferred to Houston where she spent the majority of her childhood. “Dad was my mentor in life,” Barbara says. “He was a man of honesty and integrity. He taught me to do the right thing. This is what I strive for every day.”
Tenacity and hard work run in the family. Barbara worked three part-time jobs to make ends meet while earning her BA in Journalism from the University of Texas. After UT, Barbara put her degree to work. She started in Corporate Communications and soon found that she loved photography. This eventually led her to a commercial photo lab in Houston before moving to California to work in the same field.
While there, she married her fiancé, Gaylan, and had a son, Austin. It seemed every year presented a significant challenge for them. “We experienced the Northridge earthquake, Santa Ana winds, wild fires, floods and riots. As beautiful as it is, California was just not for us. It wasn’t home. So we moved back to Texas and settled in Wimberley,” she explains. That was almost 20 years ago.
In 1997 Barbara earned her real estate license. “It’s work I love and there’s nothing else I’d rather do. There are challenges to working in a rural market, but I thrive on those challenges. Every property is unique and interesting. I love problem solving and helping my clients,” she says. Well, septic and Oak Wilt inspections are typical occurrences for Barbara, but to urban agents they can be foreign.
Barbara’s career in real estate has transitioned from new agent to top producer to Broker/Owner at Hills of Texas Realty. In August 2015, her company merged with Austin-based Sky Realty to become Hills of Texas Sky Realty. “It was the right decision for me and my agents. They have always been able to count on me and still do. That means everything to me,” she explains.
Her clients definitely count on her expertise, but they also love her approach. She’s the whole package and they say things like, “We interviewed several agents, but we wanted someone we could connect with,” says one client. “Barbara walked in the door, and her enthusiasm and attention to detail won us over. She’s definitely the reason we were able to finalize the sale.”
In her free time, Barbara and her husband love boating, live music venues and time with their family and friends. She sums it up, “It just doesn’t get much better than being out on the lake, listening to music, surrounded by the beauty of the Hill Country. Life is good.”
